WindMIL Therapeutics and'<÷ the University of Californ•↔βia, Irvine (UCI) today announced t < hat the first patients have been≠ identified in an invest÷≤Ωigator-sponsored study for the collection ofπ> bone marrow from patients with gliomas. T↕↔he study will evaluate generating marrow infiltr÷∑ating lymphocytes (MILs↔δ™) for these patients throu→₹₩÷gh WindMIL’s proprietary cellular activa€♥tion and expansion process. The stud→×♣₹y is being conducted at UCI.
“Patients suffering with glioblas☆©toma are in great need of new, promi$∏Ωsing treatments that might ∏γσΩadvance the current ∑Ωstandard of care,” said DΩλ>aniela A. Bota, MD, PhD, director of the UCI Heaα₩'lth Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program, senior€ ÷• associate dean for clinical res↓↕≠earch, UCI School of Medicine≥ δ∏ and clinical director, UCI Sue &αβ Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Cent©•♥→er. “The University of California™ ↓☆, Irvine is excited to play a key r±←ole in research that may lead t↑₽o a clinical trial that enlists the imm✔£✘une system in novel ways to fight this terrib∞le disease.”
Gliomas are the most common of the maligna↕¥€nt brain tumors. Glioblastoma, the most common <≈glioma, has a five-year survival of ≠≥≠φless than 5 percent. Additional≥π treatment options are u€≈rgently needed for these pat"&ients. Adoptive immunotherapy is a possib®le approach for gliomas and the use of MILs, a 䱩cell therapy that is natur↔≈ally tumor-specific, is one sucε'×h treatment option.
The bone marrow is a unique niche in the immune≥≤∏ system to which antigen-experienced memory§•×> T cells traffic and are then ma☆intained. WindMIL has developed a p₹"★roprietary process to select, activate and γ¶expand these memory T c$εσ∞ells into MILs. Because memory T♠§← cells in bone marrow occur as a result of ≤•±the immune system’s recognition of tu>π★₩mor antigens, MILs are specifically s↑₩π₹uited for adoptive cellular£λ immunotherapy and are able to♠±₹ directly eradicate or facilit→∏$™ate eradication of each patie♣φnt’s unique cancer. WindMIL is currently s÷ >↕tudying MILs in multiple myelo×βma, non-small cell lung cancer and squamous cel¶→l carcinoma of the head and neck,♦ ₽± and plans to expand iγ" nto other solid tumors. ∏
“WindMIL is looking forward↕∞" to working with the University of ♣€®&California, Irvine on thisα÷• exciting project and is optimistic that M™→§©ILs may offer the potential to help patients w䕧ith these hard-to-treat diseases♠ ®↑,” said Monil Shah, Pharm¥≈←D, MBA, Chief Development Officer at☆>★$ WindMIL.
