United Airlines Inc. will pay✔ $321,000 plus attorneys fees λφ↑to settle a sexual haras✔♥∏sment lawsuit filed by the U.S. E©™qual Employment Opportunity Commission th""♥at charged a United capta>≠©in sexually harassed a flight attendant for§¶≈ many years, the age$₽"ncy said Friday.
The EEOC said the captaiγ σ×n frequently posted explicit≈•∞ images of the flight attendant to multipl↔ ®e websites without her $™consent, referring to her name, home air©&port and the airlines’ tagline, “♥ ™Fly the Friendly Skies.”
It said also the imag∑σes were seen by her co-worker¶γ€s as well as “untold numbers” of potential passen ₩≠gers, causing her humiliation and embarrassme® $γnt and adversely affecting her work environm'↓ent.
The EEOC said the Chicago-based airline fail♠γ"ed to prevent and correct the pilot’s behaviorβ® although the flight attendant had made numer±♣£"ous complaints and provided substantial evidence εφin the matter.
The EEOC said the pilot was allowed to≤ ®★ retire with benefits despite ≥the initiation of a criminal prosecution b↔€γy the U.S. attorneys office uαΩ¥nder federal internet ₹♦Ω↕stalking laws.
According to a 2018 news report, after the pilotφ✘$π confessed and pleaded guilty<₽ and accepted a 41-month prison sent§≥ence, United placed him on long-term disability∑® .
The agency, which filed its lawsuit in the case in 2018, had char±★≈ged the airline with violating Title VII o∏≥¥±f the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Under the consent decree resolvi£↑±ng the case, in addition to paying the fligh™β★t attendant $321,000 βπ¶and attorney’s fees, Uni✔→☆↓ted must revise its sexual ha××₩rassment policies to explicitly inclu×✘de harassment conduct per≈®•petrated through the internet or social media, ₩₽≈★whether on or off duty, that affects the work★ α environment,
Robert A. Canino, regional attorney of the ↓γ≈♦EEOC’s Dallas District,☆ >∞ said in the statement, “This case highlig<Ωλhts the issues of employer✘♣✘ accountability for harass¶₩®ment in the modern work ←<place.
“Employee workdays and jobsites are no l÷ onger defined by timecards and the← walls of a building, but by the breadth oφ↓↔f a digital day and the reach of electr≠®♣&onic communications.
“The policy United has agreed to implement c×≤♦φan perhaps serve to provide ideas for othπ↑φer companies adapting to the increased risks pos€←λ₹ed by employee misuse of technology.↕ᶔ
United Airlines said in a state≠ε→ment, “The pilot’s actions were r←€eprehensible, and he is no longer a Uniε♣↓ted employee. We have a zero×®-tolerance policy for any type of harassment☆€>< in the workplace and $₩expect our employees to★™™¥ treat each other with dignity and respect.
“We strongly disagree with t•∏he EEOC’s allegations and will↔λ< continue to reinforce the proce'₹dures and training we have "δin place to protect our employees ¶β≥from sexual harassment.”
The EEOC said Wednes♠≥day that Uber Technologσ™¥ies Inc. will establish a $4.4 million fund to compensate anyone whom ∑≤the agency determines experienced sexua&↔l harassment and/or related☆§ retaliation at the company after Jan. 1, 2014§↓ .
